New deployment of NZ troops on way to Solomons

11:19 am on 1 February 2006

The latest deployment of New Zealand Defence Force personnel to Solomon Islands leaves Christchurch today.

The 46 soldiers will spend three months with the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission, patrolling Honiara and Guadalcanal.

The mission began in July 2003 following a request from the Solomons' government for help to restore law and order.

New Zealand's Defence Minister, Phil Goff, says one extra duty for the contingent will be to provide perimeter security at Rove Prison which now houses many high-profile ex-militants.

The New Zealand Defence Force has had a presence in Solomon Islands for the past five years.
