Police in Solomons concerned at instability in Bougainville

Police in the Western Province of Solomon Islands have expressed concern about instability to the north, on Bougainville island in Papua New Guinea.

Officers posted in the provincial capital of Gizo, say the situation on Bougainville will easily affect the province, as they say is already apparent with a recent armed robbery that left two Solomon Islanders injured.

They say it appears the Regional Assistance Mission is leaving it to the Royal Solomon Islands Police force to handle the border.

On Thursday morning, two Solomon Islanders working for the Kalena logging company were injured when more than four Bougainvilleans held up the camp at gunpoint.

They stole a chainsaw, fuel and a canoe.
