Northern Marianas governor tells public servants to pay for cellphones

2:07 pm on 24 January 2006

Northern Marianas governor, Benigno Fitial has told officials with the executive branch to pay for their own cellphones.

The Marianas Variety newspaper reports Mr Fitial earlier signed a directive banning all administration personnel from traveling off-island or entering into contracts, particularly those involving employment.

The previous administration issued cell phones to key members of the executive branch, but Mr Fitial told staffers if they wanted to use a cell phone, they had to buy one.

Mr Fitial said no government employee would be paid an over-the-cap salary and he says he won't let government vehicles run around the island after working hours.
