Fiji's NLTB welcomes ADB lease proposals

Fiji's Native Lands Trust Board says it welcomes an Asian Development Bank recommendation for the country to adopt a single land lease system.

The ADB said the system would see the Government having the master lease with the Native Land Trust Board or NLTB.

The report recommended that the government lease all agricultural land from the NLTB and sub-lease that land to tenants.

NLTB spokesman Nimilote Naivalumaira, says that it could help to solve many problems with agricultural land leases.

"I think it would be a good idea. I think we'll have to look at that point properly, because then the NLTB, which has to receive the rent and all that, and distribute the rent to landowners in time and all that, we won't be worrying about the arrears and non payment of rent and all that. But for the development of the land, now that's something to be looked at."
