Unite to sort out tax rebate future, Congressman urges American Samoa

American Samoa's Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin is hopeful territorial leaders will help him sort out the best federal tax alternatives for the territory.

The Congressman has been critical of the Governor Togiola approaching two US Senators with a tax proposal, without his knowledge.

This comes as the territory seeks alternatives to replacing federal tax incentives that are helping keep two canneries in American Samoa, but which are due to expire at the end of this month.

The Congressman said getting the so-called 936 tax credits extended is the territory's main priority for the time being.

Congress has approved the extension of 936 and a vote in the Senate is expected early next year.
