Fiji's police commissioner says the police will not confront the military in the event of a coup.
Andrew Hughes has told Australian TV that police do not have the capability to oppose the military in a stand off.
He gave the response in answer to a question on what action the police would take if the military carries out its alleged threat to overthrow the government if jailed coup convicts are released.
Mr Hughes says the police have neither the moral authority nor the numbers to offer any form of resistance if the military overthrows the government.
The Fiji military has about 5,000 armed troops while the police have about half that number of officers in the force.
