Gold Ridge gold mine in Solomon Islands closer to opening but negotiators need more help

7:15 pm on 12 December 2005

The Solomon Islands Government Taskforce wants more Government support as it negotiates the re-opening the Gold Ridge Mine on Central Guadalcanal is calling for more financial support to continue talks.

Three separate Heads of Agreements is due to be signed on December 15.

The taskforce is talking with stakeholders that include the Gold Ridge Resource and Landowners Council, the Kolobisi Tailing Dam Association and Australia Solomon Gold.

The Independent Chairman of the Government Gold Ridge Taskforce and Special Secretary to Prime Minister, George Kuper, says talks have progressed.

But Mr Kuper says for stakeholders to reach final agreements, the relevant Government authorities need to support the Taskforce more, given it has had to cancel several meetings due to a lack of finance.
