PNG gold mine awarded for sustainable development

Papua New Guinea gold miner, Lihir Gold Limited, has been awarded a prestigious environmental citation for sustainable development.

Lihir won the award, presented by the international "Mining Journal" for its recently commissioned US$50 million geothermal power station facility at the mine.

Previous winners of the award include BHP Billiton, which won last year for its Mt Arthur Coal project, and Rio Tinto.

Another PNG company, Highlands Pacific Limited was awarded the Development Funding Award for securing funding for its Ramu nickel and cobalt project.
