The people of Niue are to have better access to health services after an agreement was signed between the Niue ministry of health and Counties Manukau District Health Board in New Zealand.
The agreement will see district health board staff co-ordinate training and development of Niue health professionals and facilitate Niuean referrals to New Zealand.
The programme has begun with the one-year appointment of Dr Kara Okesene-Gafa, a Niuean consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician at Middlemore Hospital, as Director of Health for Niue.
And in February, a new 4.3 million US dollar hospital, to replace that which was destroyed by Cyclone Heta in January 2004, will be completed.
The hospital has been built on a site less vulnerable to cyclone damage.
