Marshalls president stresses staunch support for Israel

The Marshall Islands president, Kessai Note, has confirmed his country is one of the most consistent supporters of Israel.

The newspaper, the Jerusalem Post, reports Mr Note's comments come during his week-long visit to Israel, during which he's met his Israeli counterpart, Moshe Katsav.

Mr Note told a state reception in his honour at Beit Hanassi, that the Marshall Islands stood proud as one of the very few and most willing supporters of Israel, even on the most controversial issues.

The newspaper says Israel provides agricultural assistance to the Marshall Islands in return for support at the United Nations.

The United States and its freely associated states in the Pacific last year voted with Israel against a United Nations resolution to ask the Jewish state to stop building a wall to seal off Palestinians in the West Bank.
