A United Nations committee meeting on "Poverty Eradication and Developmental Issues" has been told Fiji receives an estimated US$270 million a year in remittances from its workers abroad.

The Fiji Times reports that the figure was given by Fiji's deputy UN representative, Filimoni Kau.

Mr Kau said the huge amount received by Fiji in these remittances was very important because of its contribution to the development of the economy.

He said Fiji supports that call for building migrant networks with their home countries to facilitate the flow of knowledge, technology, investment and trade.

But, he said the increase in remittances also meant that more and more skilled labour is being lost from Pacific island countries.
