A Papua New Guinea woman has been arrested after allegedly trying to sell her six-month-old baby for 165 US dollars.

The mother reportedly told police she had left her three other children with friends and was trying to sell the child in Port Moresby to pay off debts and feed her family after her husband deserted them for another woman.

Police Sergeant Patrina Dikin has told reporters that acting on a tip-off, she met the mother yesterday and pretended to be interested in buying the baby.

When the woman confirmed the baby was for sale she was arrested and the child was put into the hands of welfare officers.
