Fiji labour minister asks workers to be patient over pay claims

Fiji's Minister of Labour is urging the country's public servants to be patient over their pay claims.

The Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions says their 13,000 members will take strike action next month if the government does not honour its agreements.

The public servants were awarded a Cost of Living Adjustment last month and payments under the Performance Management System agreed to two years ago.

But Labour Minister Kenneth Zinck says the unions should apply to the courts for their money and any industrial action will be considered illegal.

"Well, the strike is unlawful. They can't go on strike, there's no two ways about that. There are processes, there are ways to do it, they can't just say 'ok we're going on strike because you haven't paid me.'"
