5:04 pm on 2 November 2005

Two soldiers from the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands have been killed in bomb attacks in Iraq.

The Pacnews agency says the two were 28-year old Sergeant Wilgene Lieto and 32-year old Army Specialist Jeff Derrence Jack.

The two have been deployed in Iraq since January.

They were killed while on patrol in Balad, around 42 miles north of Baghdad on Monday.

The deaths bring to three the number of CNMI soldiers who have died in the Iraq conflict.

Flags are to fly at half mast for at least a week in the CNMI, which is providing more than 500 personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan.
