French Polynesia considers buying Auckland hostel

2:33 pm on 27 October 2005

The French Polynesian government is considering buying a large hostel in Auckland to house students and family of patients sent for treatment to New Zealand.

The housing minister, Gilles Tefaatau, told the Tahitipresse news agency that a delegation has looked at the Rocklands Hostel in Epsom.

The 169-room building is a heritage site dating back to 1865.

Mr Tefaatau says if the government buys the building, the main wing could accommodate a French Polynesian delegation, similar to the arrangement in place in Paris.

The possible purchase is expected to be discussed by the government in a month once all the costings have been made.
