French Polynesia is to have an alcohol-free day.

The health ministry and an abuse prevention organisation say they want to declare Saturday October the 29th to be alcohol-free territory-wide.

The aim is to make people in the age group of 16 to 25 aware of the problems related to alcohol abuse.

A psychologist, Tatiana Nouveau, has told the Tahitipresse news agency that the younger consumers are the higher the risks are for them to suffer ill health.

The agency quotes a study made six years ago showing that 59 percent of pupils have consumed alcohol, among them 28 percent who were 10 and 11 years old.
