PNG row over defence boss reappointment

Papua New Guinea's former chief of the Defence Force, retired Major General Jerry Singirok, has been accused of trying to derail the reappointment of commander, Peter Ilau, for a second term.

The defence minister, Mathew Gubag, has told the National newspaper that General Singirok had written a letter to the Prime Minister in which he accused Commodore Ilau of being incapable of developing the PNGDF and of engaging Australian military officers to take over strategic and national functions.

Mr Gubag, who was sent a copy of the letter, said General Singirok's claims were misinformed, misleading and without substance.

He said he was pleased with Commodore Ilau's performance, and believed his appointment should be extended.
