US army recruiters in American Samoa

Military recruiters from the United States are on a routine visit in American Samoa to try to find young people to enlist.

The drive is being carried out by the Portland Battalion which is responsible for enlisting recruits for the Pacific region which includes Hawaii, Guam and American Samoa.

The US military has been faced with difficulties in getting more soldiers following the commitments in Iraq.

Sgt Major Rudolph Jackson says the Army is focusing major attention on educational and career opportunities to entice new enlistments from the territory.

"Through the education awareness, I think, the kids will feel more, you know, be in better position to make a decision if this is an option for them and the parents will feel more confident and more relaxed in supporting their decision to serve."

So far, the Iraq war has claimed the lives of seven American Samoans.
