A preliminary study has been carried out to replace diesel fuel with coconut based bio-fuel on the Fiji island of Rotuma.

Radio Fiji reports that the study is part of the Asian Development Bank's renewal of energy and energy efficiency programme for the Pacific.

It found that Rotuma suffers shortages of fuel because of its distance from the main islands of Fiji but has an abundance of coconuts which are under used.

It found that there's enough copra on the island to be converted into bio-fuel to generate electricity and at the same time create jobs.
