Predictions that doctors' strike in Samoa could last another four weeks

3:10 pm on 10 October 2005

Doctors in Samoa maintain that there is public support for their month-long strike even though it is likely to continue for some time.

A member of the Samoa Medical Association, Dr Viali Lameko, who's one of 32 public doctors on strike over pay and conditions, says it could be another four weeks before it is resolved.

The commission of enquiry into the doctors' grievances has been extended and will now not report its findings to cabinet until the 21st of October.

Dr Lameko says the delay has not altered the doctors' stance.

"All of us are on strike without any pay. That is, we're all on leave without. It has hit us a little bit but it's also shown at this time, the public support, you know, our families, our friends and everyone who's helping each member - monetary donations and food, and things like that."
