Mobile phone company Vodaphone Fiji has signed an 18-million US dollar contract with Ericsson Australia to extend its 3-G network to Fiji.
In what will be a first for a Pacific Island country, the 3-G network will ensure efficient delivery of multi-media content.
Under the 5-year contract, which includes turnkey project management and business consulting, Ericsson will also provide managed services.
Vodaphone Fiji's Aslam Khan says Ericsson is the world leader in this area and will help drive industry growth, create new jobs and deliver new services to Fiji consumers and tourists.
Apart from Fiji customers, about half of the more than half a million tourists who visit the country each year bring their mobile phones with roaming facilities to use Vodaphone Fiji's network.
