7:49 pm on 5 October 2005

Australia says it will give Tonga border security expertise to fight corruption within the Tongan Customs Service.

Australia's Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Bruce Billson, says a senior Australian Customs Officer will become the head of the organisation for a limited period.

Mr Billson says the assistance is offered after being asked by Tonga which reported decreased customs revenue.

The Australian support is worth more than 750,000 US dollars over 18 months.
