A convicted rapist who allegedly confessed to Fiji police that he murdered three teenage sisters has pleaded not guilty in court.

The news agency, AAP, reports that fisherman Dip Chand had allegedly told police he killed the sisters during a weekend boat trip in June off Fiji's main island and dumped their bodies at sea.

Local media report that in the High Court in Lautoka yesterday, the 43-year-old pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder after being declared mentally fit to enter a plea.

Chand is already serving a 20-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to the rape of three other girls, crimes which came to light when the sisters were reported missing.

His murder trial is scheduled to begin in May.
