Tuvalu links its fate with people on melting icecaps

Tuvalu says its fate is linked with that of native peoples living on melting ice within the Arctic Circle.

The ambassador of Tuvalu to the United Nations, Enele Sopoaga, was speaking alongside representatives of two Arctic Circle native peoples at Middlebury College in the US state of Vermont.

The newspaper, The Herald, reports Mr Sopoaga told the students that between 50 and 100 years, global warming will melt enough Arctic ice to raise ocean levels above the highest points on Tuvalu.

In 2002, Tuvalu announced it would sue the United States, which pulled out of the Kyoto Protocols on carbon dioxide reductions.
