A Fiji government minister says fathers are selling their daughters in a local human trafficking market.
The Fiji Sun reports that the minister for women and social welfare, Adi Asenaca Caucau, made the claim at the Pacific Consultation on Addressing Violence Against Children which is now under way.
Adi Asenaca said the internal trafficking of young girls is now one of Fiji's biggest problems and cited the case of a girl whom they had to move to a home in a secret location for her protection.
She said child pornography is also on the increase in Fiji but the problem is that there is a market locally where young girls are sold.
Adi Asenaca said they are working with the police and NGOs to curb the problem of child pornography.
She said the consultation would reveal the problems that individual Pacific island nations face.
