PNG senior minister calls for greater role for women

6:30 pm on 20 September 2005

Papua new Guinea's Internal Security Minister has challenged men to let women manage family budgets because he says they know the needs of the families better than the men.

The Post Courier reports that Bire Kimisopa also said men should surrender their pay packets to their wives and listen to what the women have to say about how to bring up families.

Mr Kimisopa said this when calling for a greater role for women in nation building over the next 30 years.

He said PNG over the next 30 years must proceed with the right policy mix to usher in a new role for women, which would see them play a greater role in all sectors of the economy.

The minister said gender equality cannot be pursued by legislation, policy announcement or propaganda by some non-government organisation or government-sponsored initiative.

Mr Kimisopa said it must be driven by PNG's men firstly owning up to the right values.
