American Samoa hears case of unprecedented challenge by woman chief

3:52 pm on 16 September 2005

The hearing is being held in American Samoa today in a case of a female chief who has just been sacked as a county chief.

Fanene Fetaiaiga Kava was removed as the county chief of Mauputasi District by one of the highest ranking male chiefs in the territory - Mauga Tasi Asuega.

Mrs Kava is being represented by the former attorney general, Fiti Sunia at this afternoon's hearing to decide whether the High Court has jurisdiction to hear the case.

Our correspondent, Monica Miller, says the case is unprecedented.

"There's not many women matai in Pago Pago. She contends its because of personal differences between her and Mauga. And Mauga has essentially used his position as secretary of Samoan Affairs to remove her, but she doesn't agree with the way this was done."
