2:03 pm on 15 September 2005

Authorities in Fiji are cracking down on marriages of convenience and are seeking the help of the public to track down lawbreakers.

The Fiji Times quotes the director of immigration, Eroni Luveniyali, as saying the public's help is essential in cracking down on such marriages.

The action has become necessary following increasing reports of foreign nationals marrying Fiji citizens in order to be able to stay in the country.

Mr Luveniyali says any case of a marriage of convenience with ulterior motives or with a hidden agenda should be reported immediately so a thorough investigation can be carried out.

He says the registrar of marriages has been asked to consult with his department on matters of clearance before marriages involving a foreign national and a Fiji citizens is performed.
