New Caledonia police evacuate Noumea buildings after explosives found in harbour

12:28 pm on 15 September 2005

Police in New Caledonia have cordoned off part of Noumea's waterfront and evacuated several buildings after explosive devices were discovered floating in Noumea's harbour.

The devices, which have been identified as unexploded Second World War anti-aircraft shells, were attached to a metal wreck.

While extracting the wreck, at least two of the 11 devices attached to it fell into the water.

The army has not been able to retrieve them because it has no divers specialised in bomb disposal in New

Caledonia.

The other shells have been removed by the army to be destroyed at one of its bases.
