Cook Islands PM meets deputy amid uncertainty over future of government

2:22 pm on 13 September 2005

The Cook Islands' prime minister has been meeting his deputy to discuss the appointment of two new cabinet ministers.

The prime minister Jim Marurai sacked the foreign minister, Tom Marsters, and the justice minister, Tupou Faireka, last week.

It follows Mr Marurai's sacking of Sir Geoffrey Henry from the deputy prime ministership.

The three sacked ministers are from the Cook Islands Party which won a large number of seats in parliament at the last election, but which doesn't have a large enough share to form a government.

Sir Geoffrey Henry is scheduled to return to Rarotonga from Fiji tomorrow.
