A spokesman for Solomons Islands Department of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace, Augustine Taneko, says the need for reconciliation between the Guadalcanal Province and the national government must be seriously embraced.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports that Mr Taneko says it is an important step towards the achievement of meaningful and sustainable peace for the nation.

At a meeting of representatives from Guadalcanal and the Government's Reconciliation and Rehabilitation Task-force, Mr Taneko, said there was a need for careful consultation with people from the province.

He says it must be ensured that the truth not suppressed and that the peace the people want is genuine.
