Cooks government reconsiders Mangaia sacking

3:26 pm on 7 September 2005

The Cook Island Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Terepai Maoate, says the government may reconsider its decision to dismiss Mangaia island secretary, Tuaine Tuara.

The plan to sack her prompted the public service commissioner, Joseph Caffrey, to consider resigning, saying the cabinet decision is against the law.

Dr Maoate says the issue has been given to a third party.

"What I know is that this has been deferred for a further opinion independent of the Public Service Commission and the Crown law."
