Solomons government wants new ownership arrangement for RIPEL

The Solomon Islands Government wants to see a new ownership arrangement of Russell Islands Plantations Estate Limited.

The Prime Minister Sir Allan Kemakeza says Cabinet had already decided that this is the only way out in resolving the strike by plantation workers which has lasted for more than a year.

He says the prolonged strike is causing great economic loses to the company, the shareholders, and the country.

Sir Allan says Government had distanced itself from the issue because removing RIPEL's General Manager John Whiteside as demanded by the Workers Union was a matter best dealt with by the company directors.

But he says that since the strike is causing economic set back in one of the country's main revenue earning industries, the Government has decided the only way out is to let a new owner take over the company.

The SIBC quotes Sir Allan saying this would be in line with the Government's new investment policy.
