The Australian Greens senator Bob Brown is calling on his country to accept future refugees from Pacific islands affected by global warming.

Senator Brown said Australia, as a major polluter, had a responsibility to help the victims of rising ocean levels.

He said Australia is the worst polluting country per capita on Earth when it comes to global warming under the Howard government.

Senator Brown said his party would carry on lobbying the government for action.

"We will continue to pursue the Howard government to accept its responsibility for its role in...it's inordinate role...it's unfair role in global warming and we know that some Pacific and Indian Ocean pretty small countries are set to be swamped."
