Tonga's strikers convinced pay rise demands are affordable

Striking civil servants in Tonga remain convinced that their demands for huge pay hikes are affordable.

They have welcomed the Pacific Islands Forum sending an independent financial analyst to assess whether the government can meet pay rises of up to 80 percent.

But a member of the interim strike committee, Sione Fifita, says they've already done the figures and they do add up.

Mr Fifita says they have proposed different ways of financing the pay increases.

He say they will hold a big march next week which be attended by strikers from the outer islands.
