PNG parliamentarian makes move to improve flood protection

6:58 pm on 30 August 2005

A member of the Papua New Guinea parliament, Sasa Zibe, says he would sponsor a private members bill to Parliament to have water catchment or buffer zones built alongside river banks.

Mr Zibe's electorate of Huon Gulf was one of the worst hit by last week's floods through the Markham Valley and Lae, and the move is to limit damage to properties by flooding.

The Post Courier reports Mr Zibe said proactive measures were needed to reduce the impact of natural disasters such as floods and rising sea levels.

Meanwhile the Governor of Morobe, Luther Wenge toured the flood ravaged areas in Lae yesterday accompained by other local government officials to assess the damage.

The floods in Lae have now subsided.
