Pitcairn Islander rape accused in legal limbo in New Zealand

A Pitcairn Islander who volunteered to go to New Zealand in order to face rape charges is yet to be given a date for a trial after being on bail in Auckland for six months.

Australian-based retail sales manager Shawn Brent Christian faces two charges of rape and one of aiding and abetting another to rape on Pitcairn.

Mr Christian's trial was scheduled to start on October the 31st.

But the registrar of the Pitcairn Supreme Court in Auckland, Graham Ford, says that's likely to be put back even further because Mr Christian's lawyer may want a hearing next month.

Mr Ford says the court wanted to bring the date forward but the lawyer had other commitments waiting.
