Flooding in Solomon Islands leaves dozens homeless

10:13 am on 24 August 2005

Four weeks of heavy rain on the remote Weather Coast of Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands has left dozens of people homeless and destroyed food gardens.

The National Disaster Management Council says 20 families have been displaced from Haliatu village alone.

The NDMC says debris damming rivers is a particular concern.

It says gardens have been affected by both flooding and landslips, and it reports that access to the region is difficult.
