Fiji Labour leader to sign deal with Chinese communists

The Fiji Labour Party will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Communist Party of China to develop better relations between the two parties.

The Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, who is on an official visit to China with his deputy Poseci Bune and four other MPs, will sign the agreement in Beijing today.

It will be countersigned by Zang Zhijun, the vice minister of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party.

Part of the memorandum of understanding will provide for the establishment of better relations between the two parties.

They will also agree to joint efforts to promote cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, cultural and other fields and to promote peace and development in the region.

Mr Chaudhry and his party began their visit yesterday with a briefing on China-Taiwan relations from the vice minister of the Communist Party's Office Taiwanese Affairs.
