The Pacific Island Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin, says a Forum mission to French Polynesia this week will consult with the territory on its plans for the future, including the issue of closer engagement with the Forum.

Mr Urwin says French Polynesia is currently a Forum Observer, and the organisation is aware that the territory might wish to explore that further.

He said the forum was currently reviewing its membership categories, which consists of 16 full members, and three Observers -- French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Timor Leste.

Mr Urwin said one of the suggestions for Forum Leaders to consider at their October summit in Papua New Guinea was a proposal for Associate Member status.
