Rain in PNG's Bougainville may lead to food shortage

3:23 pm on 17 August 2005

Continuing rain in southern Bougainville is likely to cause food shortages in parts of the Papua New Guinea island.

Flooding from heavy rain coupled with high king tides at the weekend killed at least one person and there are reports of some houses being swept away in southern and central parts of the island.

Roads through central Bougainville are now usable but the police commander in in Buin in south Bougainville, Paul Kamuai, says travel through to Siwai is still not possible.

He says most people have enough food now but if the rains continue there will soon be shortages.
