Fiji Sugar Grower Council still concerned about land lease non-renewals

The chief executive of Fiji's Sugar Cane Growers Council has welcomed an apparent change in attitude from the Native Lands Trust Board over renewing land leases.

The Council's CEO Jaganath Sami says has played a part in encouraging the NLTB to begin facilitating consultation between landowners and tenants towards signing early renewals of leases.

This comes amid reports that more landowners are willing to renew leases.

Mr Sami says despite this there are still thousands of displaced tenants living in squatter settlements after years of non-renewal of the leases.

"To some extent yes, this has worked well, but I will not say that we are solving all the problems. We still have more than 50 percent of the leases which have expired and are still perhaps lying idle and no decision has been made."
