More talks in French Polynesia amid threat of a teachers strike

12:10 pm on 15 August 2005

The teachers' union in French Polynesia says more talks are scheduled with the education ministry tomorrow amid a threat to go on strike.

The primary school teachers are set to disrupt the start of the new school year following disagreements over the new school calendar and the training of teachers.

The Tahitipresse news agency says a round of talks was held yesterday and they will continue tomorrow.

Reports say a union call for the dismissal of a senior education ministry official has been dropped.

A union leader, Marc Ploton, says the education minister had been hiding behind a letter calling for the official's removal but Mr Ploton says that issue is no longer central.
