Court orders Tongan government not to move striking workers out of their camp

The Tongan government has been ordered by the Chief Justice not to move striking government workers from an area in the centre of Nukualofa where they have been meeting for the past three weeks.

Matangi Tonga's on line service says on Friday the police took action to move the demonstrators.

But the interim Public Service Association successfully applied for an injunctions against the move.

Chief Justice Robin Webster issued the temporary injunction on the grounds that all protests were peaceable and that noise was kept to a reasonable volume, especially during working hours.

The public servants are now into their fourth week of industrial action in support of wage claims of up to eighty per cent.
