Security scare at Fiji parliament

10:14 am on 12 August 2005

Members of the Police Tactical Response Unit had to be rushed to Fiji's parliament to further tighten security yesterday after a senior police officer spotted a man carrying firearms covered with a cloth travelling in a taxi.

Radio reports of the sighting also put Suva residents on alert in case an armed robbery was planned.

The police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, says his officers tracked down the taxi and its driver led them to the passenger who was allegedly carrying the weapons.

Police found a very good plastic replica of an M-16 sub machine gun and a pistol on the man.

Mr Hughes says carrying such replica weapons is illegal and the man is likely to face charges.
