King of Wallis affirms links to France

The king of Wallis has declared his patriotic adherence to France.

The 86-year-old king, also known as the lavelua, says recent disagreements only relate to the French administrator, Xavier de Furst, whom he wants to have replaced.

The king has issued a statement of his loyalty to the French state amid a crisis which has led to rifts among rival clans and a clash in June.

But he says this loyalty doesn't amount to him renouncing his customary rights.

The king and his supporters have been asking the French administrators to leave Wallis after the judicial authorities moved to enforce a jail sentence against one of his grandsons.
