More than 40 tremors have shaken the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands as Anatahan experienced long-period earthquakes.

The US Geological Survey and the Emergency Management Office say the seismic station on nearby Sarigan recorded three tremors with magnitudes of about 4.

The Pacnews news agency reports that tremor levels intensified rapidly early Monday morning, indicating another possibly strong eruption.

Last Wednesday, volcanic activity escalated and ash emissions reached an altitude of about 42,000 feet.
