Fiji soldiers and police to serve with UN forces in Sudan

10:14 am on 4 August 2005

Fiji soldiers and police will be deployed in Sudan as part of a United Nations mission to restore peace to the trouble torn African country.

13 Fiji soldiers will join a 750-strong UN military observer force while six police officers will be part of a UN civilian police force numbering 715.

Four Fiji police officers and two soldiers are already in Sudan at the invitation of the United Nations.

Fiji's minister for home affairs, Josefa Vosanibola, says cabinet has already approved the deployment with costs to be met from the regular police and military budgets.

The international deployment follows the signing of an agreement to set up the United Nations Peace Mission in Sudan in January this year.
