6:15 am on 2 August 2005

The House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee in American Samoa is delaying making a decision on a bill the that would impose a ten-cents tax on imported half litre water bottles.

They want to hear submissions from water bottle companies and distributors.

The bill would impose taxes on a sliding scale on other sized water bottles as well.

It's proposed that money collected from this tax would go to fund salary increases for public teachers, medical professionals and running costs of the Fono operations while the rest would go into the general fund.

The government currently imposes a 5 percent excise tax on all products imported in the territory.
