Regional trades unions meet in PNG for first time

10:18 am on 25 July 2005

The regional organisation of trades unions is meeting for the first time in Papua New Guinea.

The South Pacific Oceanic Council of Trade Unions hopes the summit will galvanise the labour movement in the region.

The chairman of the council, Fiji's Rajeshwar Singh, says the regional representatives will have the chance to learn from the union movement in PNG.

"There is the PNGTUC conference at the same time, so we will meet there, and also participate in the PNG Trade Union Congress conference, and the important thing is there are two factions of the Congress, and they are getting it together for the first time."

Mr Singh says representatives will discuss how to improve existing organised labour in the region, and about how to solve problems with unions that lack funds and expertise.
